Kaplan turbine is applicable to the middle & low water head and large flow hydropower station. Water head is about 3 meters to 80 meters, normally less than 50 meters. Under the same head, its specific speed is higher than the Francis turbine. Water flowing between the guide vane and the runner is radial into axial, and in the runner area, water flow keeps axial direction.
Kaplan turbine runner consists of runner body, blade, and runner cone. Blade number is less than the Francis turbine, and the blade axis is perpendicular to the turbine axis.
Under the same head, its discharge capacity is better than while the cavitation performance worse than the Francis turbine. It is divided into two types: the runner blades rotate during the operation and it doesnĄ¯t rotate during the operation.
